A Whirlwind of Emergence

Most months I use this space to share some reflections on something that I have learned about that connects with the work I do at Optimistic Anthropology. But this month, I'm going to try to connect the dots between a couple of things, because July has been an unexpected whirlwind!

When I look back on my life, I see how both of these firsts were seeded long ago. I have attended protests and marches since I was seven years old, but

over the last three years have deepened my understanding and appreciation for the power of movements and non-violent resistance. Similarly, growing up in the 1990s in Chicago, which has a significant Balkan population, I read both

and

related to the region as I read and watched the news unfold of its painful transition from Yugoslavia to independent states. 

This month has been rife with experiences that have been emergent - a concept that I think is so powerful in the work of personal and social change. And deepening my understanding of emergence was another part of the whirlwind because I participated in the 

in DC. I'm processing so many lessons from those four days that that I wrote TWO blog posts about it that I hope you'll check out.
